Kate Newman
Born and bred in Southampton, where my father had a cruising yacht [a steel hull Dutch brute of a thing!] I learnt the basics onboard her and then did some dingy sailing at school and 6th form.
Then, I had the opportunity in my mid 20s to do some sailing on the training and Tall ship - HMS Astrid - to the Channel Islands and in the Caribbean for two weeks cruising around the Grenadines. The wealth of fresh fish and other exotic ingredients made for some tasty experiences there!
My more serious sailing career started in 2004 when I left my full time job and effectively took a 'year off' to sail and explore other avenues of life. Since then, I've had extensive experience on plus 30ft yachts - both racing and cruising. I believe that food and cooking on a boat is of the upmost importance as it effects everyones' performance and mood.
